The rejuvenation of Stainforth Court in Southern Tasmania will begin next month creating a more contemporary and liveable home for future tenants.
Hutchinson Builders has been appointed as the successful contractor to undertake the $5 million refurbishment, with local firm Tim Penny Architecture designing the refurbished units.
It is a significant investment to bring the ageing, but structurally sound complex into the 21st century.
After this refurbishment, Stainforth Court will have a vibrant and bright future as a contemporary, energy efficient and liveable complex with true community spirit.
The refurbishment will see units repainted and replastered, with new kitchens, new bathrooms and new floor coverings installed.
Community spaces will be refurbished and the redevelopment will see a barbeque facility, laundry facilities, raised irrigated garden beds and worm farms on site.
New security features will be installed including a video intercom system to manage access to each of the four towers, along with fencing and privacy screens between units.
Energy efficiency has also been in the forefront of the tender process and design with reverse cycle heat pumps, solar hot water, outside solar lights and double glazing incorporated into the units.
Former residents of Stainforth Court have all been successfully rehoused, allowing works to begin.
Stainforth Court will be managed by Housing Choices Tasmania, which already manages a number of properties on behalf of Housing Tasmania.
Housing Choices Tasmania has a strong track record in helping tenants connect with the services and support they need – which will greatly enhance the quality of living for residents at the new complex.
Hutchinson Builders has been operating in Tasmania since 2009 and has offices in Hobart and Launceston. It employs 54 Tasmanians, including 11 apprentices and a further 280 sub-contractors.
The refurbished units are expected to be ready for new tenants in January 2014.
