Minister's media release

The Tasmanian Government is conducting an open tender process to select an operator for the Hobart Private Hospital when the current contract expires in December 2019.

The process is being managed by the Department of Health. It will begin on 31 January 2019.

The Hobart Private Hospital is collocated with the Royal Hobart Hospital and is critical to the delivery of comprehensive health services to the Tasmanian community, and to attract and retain the best clinicians, nurses and allied health professionals.

The facility is currently operated by leading Australian health care provider Healthscope under a 20-year arrangement originally signed in 1999.

The Tasmanian Government is committed to maximising the availability of private health services in the State and to ensure the sector is working seamlessly with the public system, and taking as much pressure of the public system as possible.  It wants to negotiate a new contract that better reflects a contemporary collocated healthcare arrangement, gets the best value for the Tasmanian community for its ongoing investment in the private hospital and provides increased levels of services to better serve the current and future health interests of the State.

The tender process will be managed under strict probity and governance rules and guidelines to get the possible outcome for the Tasmanian community.

A decision on a future operator is expected to be made by the middle of the year. The new contract will begin on 14 December 2019.
