Tasmanian Health Organisations

Tasmanian Health Organisations (THOs) are the name being given to Local Hospital Networks and are a key part of national health reforms.

They bring the management of local hospitals back to local areas and will mean:

  • greater local control of hospital services
  • more public information about hospital services and
  • hospital services will be better tailored to the needs of the local  community

The Tasmanian Government has decided that Tasmania should have three THOs, based in the north-west, the north and the south of Tasmania.

The structure will build on and mirror the geographic boundaries of Tasmania’s successful Area Health Services.

Together with the additional financial security provided by the Australian Government commitment to increase its share of hospital funding, three THOs will deliver the best health outcomes for Tasmanians.

THOs will be independent, local organisations that will be responsible for managing public hospital services and the funding to provide those services.

THOs will have their own Governing Councils, will appoint their own CEO, and will have more autonomy, responsibility and accountability for delivering services to their community. Each Governing Council will be a highly qualified skills-based board and it is anticipated that some qualified candidates will be drawn from each local area.

The implementation of Tasmania’s THOs will commence with the introduction of legislation into Parliament. The establishment of the THOs is anticipated to commence later this year and be operational by 1 July 2012.
