Medicare Locals

Under the national health reforms, the Australian Government plans to set up a network of Primary Health Care Organisations (Medicare Locals) across Australia.

Medicare Locals will have a number of key roles in improving primary health care services for local communities. The Australian Government states that they will:

  • Make it easier for patients to access the services they need, by linking local General Practitioners (GPs), nursing and other health professionals, hospitals and aged care, and maintaining up to date local service directories.
  • Work closely with Local Hospital Networks (LHNs) to make sure that primary health services and hospitals work well together for their patients.
  • Plan and support local after hours face-to-face GP services.
  • Identify where local communities are missing out on services they might need and coordinate services to address those gaps.
  • Support local primary care providers, such as GPs, practice nurses and allied health providers, to adopt and meet quality standards.
  • Be accountable to local communities to make sure the services are effective and of high quality [1]

The Australian Government has recently announced that General Practice Tasmania Network will be Tasmania’s single Medicare Local, with three branch networks aligned with existing GP Division and Area Health Service boundaries.

The General Practice Tasmania Network comprising GP Tasmania, GP South, GP North and GP Northwest will be established as part of the first tranche to be operational by July 2011.
