Winter Demand Management Plan

The Department of Health’s Winter Demand Management Plan 2019 ensures your healthcare system will provide the right care in the right place at the right time this winter.

To achieve this, Tasmania’s health agencies are working together to build winter capacity at each major public hospital.

Winter capacity initiatives include improving patient flow and discharge, managing demand for beds and optimising inter-facility transfers.

The Tasmanian Health Service is working on improving timeliness of discharge by reducing bottlenecks such as discharge of medications, diagnostic testing and treatment services that may be needed before patient discharge.

You can help

But all Tasmanian’s can play a part in reducing winter illness in Tasmania by getting a flu vaccination – it’s the best way to protect yourself, your loved ones and your community from severe flu illness.

You can get a vaccination at your GP or at some pharmacies.

Flu vaccine is free for those at highest risk of severe disease:

Note: Please only use Triple Zero (000) and Emergency Departments (ED) for a medical emergency. Too many people make the ED their first rather than last point of contact, which clogs our hospitals.

If you have flu-like illness and need to see your GP, please call the surgery first so they can take precautions ahead of your arrival to prevent other patients from catching the disease.

Also, stay away from work or school until you are well so you don’t share the flu around.
