Becoming a Dentist

How do I become a dentist?

To become a Dentist you must complete a recognised degree of study which will lead to registration with the Australian Health Professional Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Dental Board of Australia. For more information about studying to become a dentist visit the Australian Dental Association website.

Rural Allied Health Undergraduate Scholarships  may be available to rural and remote students. (Tasmania is considered to be both rural and remote).

What does a dentist do?

A Dentist is trained to diagnose and treat teeth, gums, soft tissues of the mouth and to use a range of surgical and clinical procedures including:

  • Consulting with patients about maintaining good oral health
  • Examinations
  • Taking x-rays
  • Restoring damaged teeth
  • Administering local anaesthetics
  • Performing surgical procedures

Further studies can lead to specialty areas of orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, paediatric dentistry, endodontics or special needs dentistry.

Where do Dentists work?
