What is a foster carer?
A foster carer gives care and support to children and young people who cannot stay with their family.
How does foster caring work?
A foster carer welcomes children and young people into their own home - usually for a few days, up to a few months. Some foster carers take on long-term care while others provide respite care, which gives a break to a child's regular carer.
Will I make a good foster carer?
To be a good foster carer you will need to be:
- flexible and resilient
- a person with good communication skills
- committed to supporting children who may be afraid or traumatised
- able to work positively with the team from Children and Youth Services to achieve agreed goals for a child or young person.
How will I be supported as a foster carer?
Foster carers receive a non-taxable, regular payment to reimburse them for costs associated with their caring role. Carers also receive appropriate training and can access after hours emergency advice and assistance.
Foster carers are a vital part of the Tasmanian community.
