Report shows better housing and homelessness support for Tasmanians

The latest Report on Government Services has revealed almost 95 per cent of public housing in 2010-2011 was allocated to Tasmanians in greatest need, compared to 74 per cent nationally.

At the same time, the Tasmanian public housing waiting list has been cut by more than 10 per cent and is continuing to decrease.

State and Commonwealth Government investment delivered over 1 400 affordable homes between January 2009 and June 2012, while 1 000 more will be built over the next four years.

These homes will be funded by private and not-for-profit organisations with State Government financial and in-kind support.

A number of performance improvements have also been made over the past 12 months, including a cut in the cost to government of managing public housing.

Tasmania has the lowest rate of homelessness at 32 people per 10 000 population.
