There will be temporary disruptions to traffic on Wellington and Cleveland Streets on three nights this week to allow for transport of wide loads to Launceston General Hospital (LGH).
The loads will be carrying nine steel helideck sections that will form the platform that helicopters will land on, each weighing seven tons, in modules of nine metres by nine metres.
The modules are being transported from Haywards Steel Fabrication near the Launceston Airport over three nights, to minimise traffic disruption. There will be no disruption to daytime traffic.
There will be temporary road closures on the nights of Monday 26, Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 February 2024:
- Wellington Street (between Howick Street and Frankland Street) will be closed for up to 15 minutes at a time between 9:30 pm to 2:30 am.
- Cleveland Street (from Wellington Street to the LGH) will be closed for 5 hours from 9:30 pm until 2:30 am.
The vehicle convoy will travel to Launceston via Evandale Road and Midland Highway, and is limited to a speed of 40 km/h.
Traffic Management will be in place and Visual Message Boards will be placed on the Midland Highway and Evandale Road, with a recommended detour via Hobart Road.
There will be no disruption to Ambulance Tasmania and the LGH Emergency Department during the road closures. Patient and visitor parking will only be affected by way of exiting the LGH via Howick Street instead of Cleveland Street. Signage will be provided to communicate this minor change. Hospital staff can access car parking from Frankland Street.
The modules will be lifted into position on top of the Cleveland St car park by the on-site tower crane and installed on the helipad substructure.
