Oncology Pharmacists work with you and members of your treating oncology team to make sure the medicines prescribed are the best treatment for you. They are available to discuss medicines and to provide advice about the best way to take them. This is particularly important if you are starting a new treatment for your cancer as the Oncology Pharmacist is a specialist in this area.

Feel free to ask the pharmacy staff any questions you may have about your medications. This is particularly important if you experience side effects or start a new medication. You can do this by asking to speak with the Pharmacist at any time during your oncology treatment. The Pharmacist may be able to answer your questions at the time or they might schedule an appointment so that they can go over things with you more thoroughly.

The pharmacy can provide written information about any medicine you have been prescribed in the hospital as well as prepare medication lists with information about each medication.

When attending an appointment with the Oncology Pharmacist, please bring a current list of your usual medicines. This includes any medicines that you purchase over the counter at your local pharmacy or supermarket, and any supplements or natural therapies you take.

Pharmacy Fees

Outpatient

Most medications supplied by the Holman Clinic Pharmacy will be free of charge regardless of their actual cost. Some medications may require a co-payment which will be $6.80 for concession patients and $38.80 for general patients.

Medication dispensed from prescriptions by the pharmacy dispensary on level 3 will incur the normal fees that would be paid at a community pharmacy.

Inpatient

During your stay as an inpatient, the pharmacy will supply the medications used during your stay at no cost.

Discharge medications that are taken home will be dispensed and charged per item.

To help pharmacy determine appropriate charges you may be asked for your government Medicare, Concession, Veteran or Safety Net cards.

Tips to Reduce Waiting Time

Some medications will be dispensed by the Pharmacy dispensary team on level 3. When ordering these outpatient prescriptions please use the messaging service by calling 6777 6728 then follow the prompts. Please leave your name, medication required, phone number and collection date.

It is required to allow at least 2 working days for repeat prescriptions to be dispensed by the level 3 pharmacy dispensary at the LGH. This is to ensure we can prioritise our dispensing and help prevent delays with ordering medications from suppliers.

Ask us if your medication would be available at a community pharmacy. It may be more convenient to have your medications dispensed by your regular pharmacy. This may not always be possible as some medications may only be available at a hospital pharmacy.

General Medication Tips

• If you are having trouble remembering when to take medications it can help to note doses on a calendar or diary. Community pharmacies can also package medications in blister packs to simplify dosing. This service incurs a weekly fee.
• Prescribed medications should only be taken by the person they are prescribed for.
• Keep your medication out of reach of children and pets.
• Store medications in a cool and dry place (below 25 degrees) unless instructed otherwise. This is because excessive heat or dampness can destroy some medicines.
• Inform your doctor if you experience side effects during treatment.
• If you stop a medication or if it expires it should be taken to a pharmacy for disposal.
