Orthotic Prosthetic Services Tasmania and your NDIS Plan

Fact Sheet

Printable PDF

As part of the roll-out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), there are changes to the funding base of some services provided by the Tasmanian Health Service. These include orthotic, prosthetic and custom seating and wheelchair services provided by Orthotic Prosthetic Services Tasmania (OPST).

If you have an NDIS Plan, you can choose which provider that you want to have deliver your services. This fact sheet is about the process of choosing OPST as your orthotic, prosthetic or custom seating and wheelchair service provider.

For more information about the NDIS and orthotic, prosthetic and custom seating and wheelchair services in general, please see the Fact Sheet : NDIS and orthotic, prosthetic and custom seating, and wheelchair services.

Developing your NDIS Plan

If you are eligible for an NDIS Plan, you will have an NDIS Planning Meeting where you will talk with an NDIA Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or Planner about the sort of supports you need and how they can be included in your NDIS Plan.

It is important that all of your orthotic, prosthetic and/or seating/wheelchair needs are included in your NDIS Plan, including:

  • Assessments - required prior to the services and equipment being quoted for by OPST or another provider. On average, funding for 10 hours of clinical time is recommended to be included in an NDIS Plan, so that required orthotic, prosthetic or custom seating and wheelchair services may be assessed for and an accurate quote provided.
  • Reviews, repairs and maintenance – funding will also be required for any of the orthotic, prosthetic or seating equipment that you are using. This applies to all equipment even if it was originally provided and funded by OPST.

When asked what you can do for yourself, the NDIS planner may be referring to what you can do without the use of assistive technology. It is important to explain what the orthosis, prosthesis or wheelchair allows you to do, that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to do without it.

Choosing OPST as your provider of orthotic, prosthetic or custom seating and wheelchair services within your NDIS Plan

You can choose OPST as your provider of orthotic, prosthetic or custom seating and wheelchair services.  Please be aware that:

  • due to demand, OPST may not be able to provide a timeframe for when your assessment will occur and when an orthosis, prosthesis or wheelchair can be provided.
  • if you want a third party (family, carer or friend) to talk or correspond with OPST about your personal information, you will need to submit a Consent to Share Personal Information Form. If you wish to apply to access your written personal information held by the Tasmanian Health Service, please complete an Application for Assessed Disclosure Form.

If you choose OPST to provide orthotic, prosthetic or custom seating and wheelchair services for you through your NDIS Plan, these are the next steps:

  1. You will need to ensure that you talk with the NDIA Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or Planner in your NDIS Planning Meeting about needing orthotic, prosthetic or custom seating and wheelchair services, including that you:
    • Will require funding for assessment.
    • Will require funding for reviews, repairs and maintenance or equipment.
    • Choose OPST to be your service provider.
  2. Once funds are allocated for an assessment, please contact OPST to confirm this with them. OPST will contact you at a later date to arrange an initial assessment appointment with an orthotist/prosthetist or with a seating clinician.
  3. After your assessment appointment, an orthotist/prosthetist or seating clinician will provide a quotation to you for the services you require for the following 12 months.
  4. A Service Agreement will be agreed between you and OPST describing the services OPST will provide through your NDIS Plan. This Service Agreement includes the quotation for services.
  5. Based on this report and quotation, the NDIA will determine what orthotic, prosthetic, or custom seating and wheelchair supports will be included in your NDIS Plan.
  6. Once you are aware that the supports have been approved and that OPST is included as a provider within your NDIS Plan, please contact OPST to inform them of this. At a later date, OPST will then make another appointment for you with an orthotist/prosthetist or a seating clinician to begin providing the services for you as listed in your NDIS Plan.
