How can a Social Worker help?
Social Workers can assist and support you and your family during your treatment at the Northern Cancer Service. Social Workers are a key part of the cancer care team, we encourage patients and their families to check in with a member of the social work team before or during treatment.
Being diagnosed with cancer can turn your world upside down. While everyone will experience this differently, many people can experience a range of emotions which may also impact those around them. It can be overwhelming. Social Workers are available, you don’t need to face these things alone.
Advocacy
Social Workers can help you navigate the health-care system and can provide advocacy for you or family members.
Community Resources
Social Workers can link you with a range of services in the community. These include:
- Transport or accommodation needs.
- Practical help at home.
- Help with a crisis.
- Accessing wigs.
- Support groups/community activities - for example: “Look Good, Feel Better” program for men and women.
Counselling
Social Workers can provide counselling and emotional support for you and your family/carers:
- Understanding and adjusting to illness and treatment.
- Changes in lifestyle and planning for the future.
- Discharge planning after a hospital stay.
- Communicating with children or grandchildren.
- Relationship issues.
- Strategies to manage stress, anxiety, grief and loss.
- How cancer affects body image.
- End of life and bereavement support.
- Referral to specialist counselling.
Legal and Financial support
Social Workers can link you with financial and legal assistance including:
- Centrelink.
- Pro Bono legal and financial advice through the Cancer Council.
- Advanced Care Planning, Enduring Power of Attorney and Enduring Guardianship.
- Emergency financial relief.
